Why visit Vicenza and the Venetian villas of Palladio?
Vicenza, the “city of Palladio”, is a destination for cultural tourism from all over Italy and internationally, and is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
What to see in Vicenza?
The famous Palladian Basilica is the most famous public building, overlooking Piazza dei Signori, the city’s main square, where it also faces the Palazzo del Capitanio (Loggia of the Captain), just opposite the Basilica.
Definitely don’t miss the spectacular Olympic Theatre, the first example of a covered theatre of the modern era. It was inaugurated in 1585 with a performance of Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and is still used today. The painted set design which is the background of the stage is breath-taking: the scenes, created for Oedipus Rex, depict the seven streets of the city of Thebes and employ the accelerated perspective technique making space look much longer than it actually is (a few meters).
Just outside the Berico capital, our drivers will take you on a typical tour of the Venetian Palladian villas, where you can see sixteenth-century villas such as the Almerico Capra Villa also known as La Rotonda, Villa Pisani, Villa Poiana, Villa Saraceno and Villa Valmarana “Ai Nani”, situated on the slopes of Monte Berico, a few hundred meters from the Rotonda of Palladio.
